Working on campus offers many benefits. Some jobs allow you to develop technical skills and are a great way to explore possible careers. Others can offer you time off and allow you to study around your work obligations.
Whatever you’re looking for, here are some reasons to consider applying for an on-campus job this year.
1. Enjoy a flexible schedule
One of the best perks of an on-campus job is flexibility. Most student jobs offer flexible hours around classes and other commitments, as well as during busy periods of the semester (such as final exams).
Many students work between 10 and 15 hours a week, with a maximum of 25 hours a week. In your on-campus job, your studies remain the priority.
2. Meet other Buffs
The other students you work with can quickly become your new friends. Departments such as the Recreation Center, the Environmental Center, the Residence Hall, and Campus Dining Services are some of the largest employers of students. These jobs allow you to spend time with other students and get to know them.
On-campus jobs also offer the opportunity to work more closely with faculty and staff. They may become mentors and potentially lead to future internships or research opportunities. Additionally, faculty or staff supervisors may provide letters of recommendation or serve as professional references later on.
3. Gain experience and professional skills
Whatever department you work in, your student work can help build your resume.
Many students develop critical skills in on-campus jobs that they can use in professional positions after college. These skills include communication, problem-solving, time management, and leadership.
There are also industry-specific student jobs that can teach you technical skills. These positions include jobs in graphic design, event planning, social media, data analysis, and research.
