Fire departments in Washtenaw County and across Michigan can again apply for federal funding to purchase life-saving equipment.
He bill signed into law by President Biden reauthorizes FEMA SAFER, Air Group and American Football Association Grant Programs. Funds can be used to cover a variety of local fire department needs, such as staffing, equipment, and training.
United States Senator from Michigan Gary Peters He introduced the legislation and says he has seen how effective the programs can be for fire departments across the state.
“First, firefighting equipment is often very expensive and it is difficult for fire departments (particularly smaller and more rural ones) to have the type of equipment necessary to protect people.”
Reauthorization is good news for Ann Arbor fire chief Mike KennedyThe department has previously received an AFG (Assistance to Firefighters) grant.
He says most of it was used to purchase air-powered respirators that freed up general fund dollars for other needs.
