Matthew Macfadyen’s surprising confession about his role in ‘Pride and Prejudice’
Matthew Macfadyen recently shared his honest thoughts on playing Mr Darcy in the 2005 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, admitting that he “didn’t really enjoy” the role.
In an interview with JOBsNews Mornings, the Emmy-winning actor reflected on his experience starring alongside Keira Knightley.
“I didn’t really enjoy it,” he admitted. “I feel bad for saying that. There were times when I had a good time, but I wish I had enjoyed it more. I wish I was less worried about it.”
Additionally, Macfadyen said he didn’t think he was the most suitable actor to play Darcy. “I felt a little bit out of place, like I wasn’t attractive enough,” the Deadpool and Wolverine actor said. “But it worked.”
Indeed, it did, as the film received four Oscar nominations. The British actor also said that he still gets a kick out of it when people publicly recognize him as Mr. Darcy.
“Probably the most flattering thing that happens to me now is people asking me, ‘Were you Mr Darcy?’” he said. “It’s been 20 years now, so I think, ‘I can’t be aging that badly.’”
The 2005 film adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, directed by Joe Wright, tells the story of the blossoming romance between Elizabeth Bennet (Keira Knightley) and Mr. Darcy (Matthew Macfadyen).
It is worth noting that Macfadyen followed in the footsteps of Colin Firth, who played Mr. Darcy in the 1995 television miniseries.
Interestingly, Macfadyen and Firth later had an in-depth conversation in which they discussed in detail their individual experiences playing the iconic character.
