Syracuse, NY – Micron Technology says it has already hired 17 people for its planned semiconductor manufacturing complex in the city of Clay.
“These hires include construction and facilities roles that are important to the initial build-out of a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility,” the company said in a statement. “We have a mix of local, transplanted and internal team member hires.”
Micron said It’s advertising for 25 more jobs to be created in Clay. Micron plans to build up to four giant manufacturing plants, or fabs, in Clay to produce millions of computer memory chips for the global market.
Construction of the first factory is expected to begin in spring 2025. The factory is scheduled to open in 2028.
The highest-paying position currently advertised on Micron’s careers website is construction procurement director, which has a salary range of $143,000 to $250,000. The lowest-paying position, construction documents controller, would pay between $57,000 and $96,000.
New York law requires companies to provide salary ranges for any work performed in the state.
All of the Micron jobs posted so far require college degrees or equivalent experience. Most require three to ten years of experience in relevant fields and pay six figures at the high end of the salary range.
Micron said a new employee’s place in the position’s salary range depends on “job location and other job-related factors, including knowledge, skills, experience, tenure, and relevant education or training.”
Micron did not specify which positions it has already filled, but many of the positions that were advertised in April are no longer on the company’s careers website. These include several construction and engineering-related positions.
Micron plans to build a massive manufacturing plant in Clay to produce next-generation semiconductors used in phones, cars and military aircraft. Micron has said it will open two factories in 2029 that would employ a total of about 4,500 people. By 2041, the company says, it plans to open two more factories that will employ another 4,500 people.
In documents filed with Onondaga County, Micron said the industrial complex in its first year would employ about 1,300 people with an average salary of $98,000.
A study funded by New York State says the Micron project could create 40,000 secondary jobs, in sectors ranging from high-tech to food services.
Full-time jobs at Micron offer a number of benefits. benefits web page According to the company, full-time employees earn 17 paid days off during their first year, a 5% match to a 401(k) account and a health care plan for which Micron pays 80% of total costs. Employees can purchase company stock at a 15% discount, and receive paid vacation and paid time off for voting and volunteering.
Micron has about 40,000 employees worldwide, including about 8,000 in the United States.
Two years ago, Micron had 48,000 employees. The company has laid off thousands of people over the past two years after sales of the company’s best-selling memory chips fell and overall revenue was cut in half. Micron has posted profits in the past two quarters.
