There are those who play for the love of the game and those who play for the love of the game. We will never know for sure whether Brian Harman falls into the latter category (not that he is returning his millions to the R&A), but the reigning Open champion confessed that money means less to him than it does to his fellow professionals.
Speaking to the media ahead of the defence of his important victory this week, Harman They Asked Whether he would play the event for less money or no money at all? “I personally would,” Harman admitted. He made sure to point out that he would certainly be in the minority here.
“I’m not sure everyone does it, but I do,” he said. “I guess some people care more about money than I do.
“I play golf for me. I play golf to see how good I can be. I play golf because I enjoy torturing myself with things that are really hard to do. That’s just me. Most of the time, when I finish a tournament, I couldn’t tell you with a comma-level accuracy how much money I made that week.”
The most recognizable thing here is “torture.” Playing golf without money or to lose money is something many of us do every week.
Harman, meanwhile, won $3 million last year at Royal Liverpool and has earned $37,726,934 on tour. This year’s Open has a $17 million purse and a $3.1 million check ready for the winner. We’re sure Harman won’t turn down the money if he can beat the odds and win back-to-back tournaments at the year’s final major, but we respect his candor when it comes to how much the money means to him.
Brian Harman doesn’t seem likely to join LIV Golf any time soon either. More money, less golf? This Grand Slam champion thinks it’s hell.
