PRESS RELEASE:

“Tallahassee was one of 117 projects nationwide to receive this federal funding,” said Mayor Pro Tem Curtis Richardson. “This is another significant achievement and demonstrates the city’s continued leadership in sustainability and public service.”
The addition of these six battery-electric buses and two electric paratransit buses will move StarMetro even further toward the City’s strategic goal of achieving an all-electric bus fleet by 2035. The new charging equipment will facilitate overnight charging and allow for route restructuring, allowing more parts of the community to be served by emission-free vehicles.
This funding was provided by FTA Grants (transit.dot.gov) for Bus and Bus Facilities Grant Programs and Low-Emission and No-Emission (Low-No) Vehicles. The Bus and Bus Facilities Grant Program provides federal funds to transportation agencies to purchase and rehabilitate buses and vans and to construct and modernize bus facilities. The Low-Emission Vehicle Program makes funds available to assist transportation agencies in purchasing or leasing U.S.-made low-emission and no-emission vehicles, making facility improvements to accommodate the vehicles, and purchasing supporting equipment such as electric battery chargers.
This funding is in addition to the $36 million in federal grants StarMetro received in 2023 to support construction of the Southside Transit Center (talgov.com)purchasing battery-electric buses, building new charging infrastructure, and developing a workforce training program. Projects like the Southside Transit Center, which is scheduled for completion in 2025, are transformative and help achieve many of the goals in the city’s strategic plan.
