When Hirshorn Chase When I was in high school in Rhode Island, I was looking at colleges and the College of Charleston stood out.
“There are not many schools with a Bachelor’s degree in hotel and tourism management“I’m glad I did,” the senior explains, adding that it helped that the school is located in a city that repeatedly appears on lists of top tourist destinations.
Hirshorn, who is also a marketing This student loves all the variables that go into an event and how each experience is different. Her classes gave her insight into multiple aspects of the hospitality industry, from finance and accounting to economics and business law.
As a sophomore, Hirshorn found the perfect college job as a banquet server at the nearby Francis Marion Hotel. She appreciated the encouragement and support she received from the team and the opportunity to see what went on behind the scenes.
As he gained knowledge and experience in the hotel industry, he received the Palmetto Hospitality Endowment Scholarship It gave him the assurance that he was on the right path.
Motivated by the vote of confidence, Hirshorn decided to participate in the Semester at Sea program to study abroad. She wanted to better understand the international hospitality and tourism industry and gain the broadest experience possible.
“We were able to see hospitality in action on board the ship – the food and beverage service, the hotel and the entertainment,” says Hirshorn. “We also experienced hospitality tourism on three continents, which added perspective to the entire program.”
As a food blogger in Charleston, Hirshorn loved trying out culinary tourism; learning to make paella in Spain was a real highlight.
Back in college, Hirshorn, who had taken an event management class with Jeremy Clementehotel and tourism management internship coordinator and lead instructor, landed a job as a banquet waiter at the William Aiken Housewhich he had visited as part of Clement’s class and had appreciated how organized the team was there.
“From my position, I get to see the ins and outs of event management,” says Hirshorn. “I really enjoy the variety of events that are held and learning the processes behind them.”
For Clement, everything Hirshorn does sets her up for success.
“The experience Chase is gaining is invaluable,” she says. “Receiving the fellowship shows that industry partners are willing to invest in her, which validates her career path.”
