The transit system said the $4,223,340 grant is part of a historic federal investment in modernizing public transportation across the United States, made possible by the Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration’s Low- and Zero-Emission Bus Grant Program.
The new CNG buses will replace Lextran’s diesel buses, which the company says have already outlived their useful life, and will provide several economic and community benefits, such as cleaner air and improved reliability for passengers. Lextran added that they will also contribute to lower operating costs, helping the system remain a vital part of the community and connect residents to essential services such as jobs, education and health care.
“We are thrilled to receive this funding, which will allow us to reduce our environmental footprint and improve the quality of service for our community,” said Fred Combs, CEO of Lextran. “The addition of these new low-emission CNG buses aligns with our commitment to sustainability and supports Lextran’s mission to serve people and our community with mobility solutions. The workforce development supported by this grant reinforces our investment and commitment to providing great jobs in Fayette County, and we are very proud of it.”
Lextran said the grant is part of the FTA’s initiative to modernize transit systems across the country, providing approximately $1.5 billion in funding to support 117 projects in 47 states. The efforts include a strategy to reduce transportation emissions, boost American industry and create good-paying jobs.
More than 60% of Lextran’s fleet is made up of compressed natural gas, battery-electric or hybrid-electric vehicles, he added, and all buses are equipped with bicycle racks and are wheelchair accessible. More information can be found at es.lextran.com.
