Great Place To Work® India has announced the list of the Top 10 Best NGOs to Work for in India in 2022. The annual list of the Best NGOs to Work for in India in 2022 demonstrates that any organization, regardless of size or sector, can be a great place to work, meaning that the organization empowers all people to reach their full potential. The study shows that NGOs have been and will continue to be the leading contributors to India’s HDI indicators, in addition to improving the standard of living of the underprivileged population, either through direct employment or through their impact.
Today, with the younger generation joining the workforce, the future looks bright. The latest study on Best NGOs to Work For in India™ 2022 reveals that the younger generation wants to work with companies that reflect their personal values. Not only that, but the younger generation wants to buy products from brands that create a positive impact. Therefore, it is imperative for NGOs to create and maintain a great workplace culture to attract/retain quality talent and continue to create a meaningful impact. The best workplaces in this segment are a true reflection of this.
“Organizations around the world dedicate their efforts to protecting human rights and public support is important to their success as they tend to have greater impact when backed by strong public advocacy. NGOs are one example of such groups. By immersing themselves deeply in communities, NGOs can ensure that the poorest of the poor in India experience sustainable growth and have access to equal opportunities.
They are becoming pillars of social development in India. Not only that, but NGOs are also becoming an option for people who are looking for a career with a sense of purpose and want to contribute to a social cause. Therefore, it becomes imperative to improve the employee experience of people working in this sector. At Great Place to Work, India, we take up this responsibility and are aware of the impact it creates.
Our research today reveals that NGOs are planning to increase their workforce by 19%, highlighting the urgency of attracting quality talent given the constraints faced by organisations in this segment. It is encouraging to see that NGOs are constantly maintaining and improving the creation of a positive working environment for their people.
In our research we also found that there are aspects that greatly enable NGOs to create a transparent culture and instill pride among their employees: values and purpose. Our study shows that NGOs that have managed to embed meaningful values within the organization through their leaders experience a significantly higher intention to stay, have greater support, motivation and pride compared to those that have not managed to do so.
We hope to see increased support for NGOs through volunteering and financial support, as organisations are also focusing on being more socially and environmentally responsible to attract and retain their people.
“Congratulations to all our winners for this coveted recognition, the journey to make India a great workplace for all is just beginning!” – Yeshasvini Ramaswamy, CEO, Great Place To Work® India.

This year, 44 NGOs applied to participate in this study.
“Recently, India has risen to the fifth position in the world ranking of countries by GDP. At almost the same time, one of the three richest people in the world is from India. However, it is unfortunate that when it comes to per capita income or the various parameters of the Human Development Index, India is far behind many third world countries and does not even figure in the top 100 countries of the world. In the Human Development Index (HDI) ranking, India is ranked 132nd in the world. This contrast is characterized by poor health infrastructure, an inadequate education system and an unemployment rate that is at an all-time high.
In this country of extreme poverty and sub-par quality of life, the state will do most of the heavy lifting on the road to recovery, but it cannot cover much ground alone. It will need the help of many social agencies and the non-profit sector, which are and will remain important players in India’s nation-building efforts. Because of their higher goals and mission-oriented work, NGOs by default accept a critical role in shaping India’s future.
In today’s India, most credible NGOs are mission-focused and therefore the sum total of their time, energy and effort is focused on their beneficiaries or fundraising for the cause they support. However, they struggle on two fronts: scaling up the impact of their work and developing their own organisation. And while some NGOs are able to attract good quality talent because of their missionary orientation, they are not always able to retain that talent.
Great Place to Work® evaluates and recognizes through this study the Best NGOs to Work for in India™. One of the parameters is the credibility of the organization’s leadership. This recognition aims to help NGOs create a culture of excellence by enhancing their employee experience and thereby retaining them, through insights, inputs and recommendations for action in organizational development. It also helps the best NGOs compete in the talent market by amplifying their employer brand. Some of the best workplaces in India fall within the Great Place to Work® circle of influence and can therefore help fund and volunteer employees from the ‘for-profit’ to the ‘non-profit’ sector. Basuri Dutta, Practice Director, Vice President, Great Place To Work® India.
All organizations were assessed using a rigorous methodology comprising two lenses. The first measures the quality of employee experience through our globally validated anonymous survey instrument known as the Trust Index™ Survey. The second lens is called the Culture Audit™, a proprietary tool of the Institute that assesses the quality of people practices in an organization, encompassing the quality of practices across organizations. The Institute conducts a thorough validation procedure on the information obtained throughout the assessment process. The Trust Index™ survey results and the Culture Audit™ results are combined to determine an organization’s inclusion in India’s Best NGOs to Work For™ 2022.
No individual or jury decides who makes the top 10 list; instead, it is the opinions of employees and the effectiveness of an organization’s people operations that determine whether it is a great place to work. This study is supported by the Great Place To Work® Institute, and a free employee feedback report is provided to all NGOs involved. Some of the names include Bharti Foundation, EnAble India, and Magic Bus India Foundation. The report and the full list of the 10 Best NGOs in India to Work For in 2022 can be found here. here.
