An NGO has launched a vital project that will bring new job opportunities to Islington. Islington council figures reveal that only 38% of Bunhill residents are in full-time employment and more than 130 young people aged between 16 and 24 are registered as unemployed.
Educating Beyond Borders launched its Social Justice Project at the Central Library on November 25.
REFLUX Founded in 2013 in London, it supports university students during and after their studies by providing them with an international system of study, work experience and training. Its aim is to offer employment opportunities to young people in Islington, particularly in the Bunhill neighbourhood.
Rox Green, EBB’s student director, said: “We’ve been doing this on a smaller scale for the last three to five years. Within 12 to 18 months, some changes start to happen and people get more work experience.”
Green also noted that prejudices and biases within the education system affect black students and international students.
“What we are launching today is that this project begins to generate some change in this problem in education, and we are going to start connecting people with the educational tools and resources they need,” he added.
EBB has already contacted Islington Council for feedback and is looking forward to starting a collaboration with Black lives matter and Confronting racism in the coming months.
