The government has no plans to raise the age limit for entering government jobs to 35, Public Administration Minister Farhad Hossain said today (July 3).
“The number of candidates for various posts will increase to a large extent. As a result, there may be more competition in recruitment. This may cause frustration among candidates below the age of 30,” the minister said in Parliament while replying to a question tabled by independent MP-elect from Pirojpur Md Shamim Shahnewous.
He said that as there is no backlog of sessions in educational institutions at present, students complete MBA in 22-23 years and SSC in 16 years.
As the upper age limit for entering government jobs is 30 years, young people have at least 6-7 years to apply for a job even after obtaining a master’s degree.
Moreover, he said, if a candidate applies within the age limit of 30 years, it takes at least two years to complete the recruitment process.
“Therefore, the requirement to raise the minimum age for joining the service from 30 to 35 years is actually more appropriate.”
Referring to the Public Service Commission report, the Minister said that according to the age and gender statistics of the candidates who passed the 43rd BCS examination, the number of recommended candidates in the youngest age group (23-25) is the highest (37.68%) and the number of recommended candidates in the oldest age group (above 29) is the lowest (1.71%).
The Minister also said that the number of vacancies has naturally decreased due to the increase in the retirement age from 57 to 59 years.
In this context, he said that if the age limit for entering the workforce is raised, the number of candidates for different jobs will increase at a significant rate.
Parliament approves national budget for fiscal year 2024-25 with GDP growth of 6.75% and inflation of 6%.
If the age limit is raised, those currently over 30 will have the opportunity, but there may be disappointment among candidates under 30, he added.
