Babcock International Group says it is creating more than 1,000 new jobs at its advanced, large-scale manufacturing and shipbuilding facility in Rosyth to support the delivery of world-class programmes and the development of its workforce’s capabilities.
Supporting Babcock’s commitment to continue developing the skills needed to support customers now and in the future, over the next four years the new job opportunities will benefit both the UK economy and local communities and will include 400 apprenticeships, 350 production support operatives, qualified engineers, tradespeople and graduates.
The roles will support programs such as the Type 31 frigate design and construction program.
“The operational production support initiative is focused on attracting people from a variety of backgrounds and experience, including those not currently in education, employment or training, and its role is to support and learn from experienced workers. Babcock’s latest recruits will join state-of-the-art digitalised and advanced manufacturing facilities in which more than £200m has been invested over the past decades.”
Apprenticeship numbers are also increasing at Babcock’s operations on the west coast of Scotland, supporting Her Majesty’s Naval Base Clyde and the UK Submarine Enterprise, with Babcock’s apprenticeship opportunities expected to double by 2024.
David Lockwood, CEO of Babcock International Group, said:
“Attracting and retaining talent is essential to the future success of our business and directly benefits the local communities in which we operate. Continued investment in Babcock’s development programmes and facilities allows our apprentices, graduates and trainees to experience a combination of work-based learning in a modern, digital industrial environment, alongside academic training with higher education partners and our own Babcock Skills Academy. This week is Apprenticeship Week in Scotland – our apprentices play a really important role in our workforces across the UK, ensuring we can maintain the technical skills needed to continue to deliver critical national defence programmes.”
Defence Procurement Minister James Cartlidge said:
“Rosyth is the hub for important UK defence and commercial programmes and it was a privilege to meet skilled workers and apprentices there last week. A career at Babcock can provide these unique opportunities and specialist technical training, as well as making a huge contribution to the Scottish economy.”
Paul Sheerin, chief executive of Scottish Engineering, said:
“The announcement from Babcock Rosyth is fantastic news for the engineering industry in Scotland – and the UK as a whole – and is very opportunely timed as it coincides with Scottish Apprenticeship Week. With a staggering four hundred of the thousand newly created jobs being for apprentices, it is a fantastic opportunity to add highly skilled, well-paid jobs to our economy and significantly increase our talent pool. It creates the opportunity for people new to the workforce and those taking the option of changing their career path to contribute to the security that is more important than ever for the UK.”
