On Thursday 4 July 2024, Africa’s first ever NGO cybersecurity training, with the theme “Empowering NGOs for a safer digital tomorrow: protecting their impact”, successfully brought together 50 participants from 40 different NGOs from across Africa.
The training, organized by Salzic Global Limited, Mother of All Nations Foundation and the Global Fund for Children, addressed the growing vulnerability of NGOs to cybercrime.
Experts estimate an alarming 11% annual increase in cybercrime since 2018, with a significant portion attributed to human error.
Zico Ishaq Abubakar Newton, Executive Director and Certified Information Systems Security Management Professional at Mother of All Nations Foundation, highlighted the critical role NGOs play in community development and their increasing reliance on technology. He highlighted the importance of cybersecurity for NGOs, comparing it to the essential use of accounting principles in organizations. “To maintain our impact in this rapidly advancing digital age, it is essential to protect our data,” Newton said.
The training programme aimed to equip NGOs with the skills to prioritise cybersecurity, recognising the changing digital landscape. In doing so, NGOs can protect themselves, their partners, their beneficiaries and the overall impact of their work.
Engineer Yakubu Lantam Abdul-Jabar, co-founder of Coldsis IT Solutions, also highlighted the vulnerabilities NGOs face in cyberspace and encouraged NGO leaders to prioritize ongoing employee training to combat threats and intrusions that could affect their finances and data.
The project was carried out in collaboration with Coldsis IT Solutions, Quran Klink, Express Phenomenon and Thenewgh Multimedia. The organisers said they are committed to making this an ongoing effort, to ensure that NGOs across Africa can navigate the digital world with confidence and security.
