A total of $500.2 million has been raised since the creation of BAA’s Official Charity Program and the John Hancock Non-Profit Program in 1989.
BOSTON – The Boston Athletic Association (BAA) has announced that $40.2 million Funds were raised for more than 200 nonprofit organizations through this year’s 127th Boston Marathon, which took place on Patriots’ Day, Monday, April 17. The fundraising total marks the highest amount raised around a single Boston Marathon, breaking the previous mark of $38.7 million set in 2019. Combined, BAA’s Official Charity Program and John Hancock Nonprofit Program have raised $500.2 million since the inception of the charity program at the 1989 Boston Marathon.
“Philanthropic and fundraising efforts around this year’s Boston Marathon reached record numbers in 2023, demonstrating the hard work and dedication of all participants who run for greater causes,” said Nicole Juri, BAA Chief Development Officer. “More than 200 charities and nonprofits will benefit from the fundraising efforts of our participants.”
The $40.2 million raised this year includes donations raised through the BAA’s Official Charity Program, the John Hancock Nonprofit Program, and other qualified and invited runners. 2,537 participants ran as fundraising athletes in the 127th Boston Marathon. Leading up to Boston On the day of the marathon race, the BAA and John Hancock organized a variety of fundraising donation initiatives to support athletes who run for causes, including the Boston Marathon Giving Day on March 15. Boston Marathon Day of Giving: $1,041,766 in donations was raised over a 24-hour period.
The BAA has annually provided nonprofit organizations associated with the BAA Official Charity Program and the John Hancock Nonprofit Program with invitational entries for the Boston Marathon. Each nonprofit directly administers its own application process, athlete selection, and fundraising minimums, deadlines, and requirements.
BAA will notify nonprofit organizations that have been selected to participate in the 128th running of the Boston Marathon as part of the BAA Official Charity Program this summer. More information can be found at the BAA Official Charity Program.
