Job interviews can seem like a high-stakes game where every word counts and one wrong answer can mean the difference between getting an offer or being rejected.
To succeed in an interview, you need to learn how to communicate effectively, says LinkedIn career expert Andrew McCaskill.
“Interviews are a performance art, and to do them well, you have to rehearse,” she tells JOBsNews Make It. “The best interviewers are those who have rehearsed their points with a mentor, a friend or even a former coworker, because that helps you feel confident and comfortable talking about yourself.”
Every job may require different skills, but there are some strategies that will work well no matter what position you’re interviewing for.
This is the smartest statement you can make at the end of any job interview, according to McCaskill:
“I want to emphasize how much I want this job. I believe that my skills and experiences are perfect for it and that I could have a strong and positive impact on the team. Here’s why…”
It may seem bold, but McCaskill says that closing an interview this way highlights two important qualities that hiring managers look for:
- Enthusiasm: If you seem neutral or apathetic about a job, you’re not likely to leave a lasting impression on the hiring manager. To show them that you’re the best fit for the position, you need to express from the start that you’re excited about the opportunity.
- Trust: You should also clearly explain your strengths and the value you would bring to the team. McCaskill recommends keeping your explanation brief and focusing on two or three skills described in the job description that you possess and that you would use to promote or support the organization’s goals.
“Think of it as your closing pitch,” McCaskill says. “You don’t want the interviewer to wonder if you’re interested in the position or if you have what it takes to succeed there.”
