Clinical Assistant Professor
Expository writing program
New York University College of Arts and Sciences
New York University Expository writing program (EWP) invites applications for full-time clinical assistant professors to teach intensive first-year writing courses across the university. We will appoint up to 5 assistant professors on a rolling basis: start dates may be as early as January 2025, but most hiring will likely begin in September 2025. The final number and start date of positions are subject to budgetary and administrative approval. Applications must be submitted by September 10, 2024.
Vacancies are for full-time, non-tenure track, renewable positions. Clinical Assistant Professor appointments are for three years, subject to renewal based on departmental review and recommendation. Subsequent appointments may be made for up to three years and include the possibility of promotion to Clinical Associate Professor and, later, to Clinical Full Professor. Clinical Assistant Professors teach a 3-hour course load, and all faculty in the Expository Writing Program are expected to participate in ongoing faculty development and in service to the program. New faculty are required to attend a one-week intensive orientation before the semester begins. Housing is not provided at NYU.
EWP is one of the largest writing programs in the United States, with 108 full-time faculty. Successful candidates will join a community of faculty who are strongly committed to pedagogical design and innovation. Our faculty hold advanced degrees in a multitude of fields and think carefully about how their disciplinary knowledge connects to and expands upon fundamental questions about rhetoric and writing.
Our current program needs to include individuals with experience in teaching multilingual and international learners and/or teaching STEM-related writing.
Successful applicants must:
- Possess an advanced degree in your field of specialization (PhD, MFA, EdD).
- have a minimum of three years of demonstrated high-level effectiveness in teaching college-level writing, creative writing, and/or other writing-intensive courses (preferably full-time) as a registered instructor prior to your appointment at EWP.
- We have experience designing curricula that emphasize research, critical reading, analysis, investigation, writing and revising, and creative thinking. We welcome faculty motivated by a sense of writing community and collective research.
- be strong writers who have demonstrated an active commitment to writing in their field.
We are firmly committed to faculty and program diversity. We believe that the excellence of a program is tied to the breadth of perspectives of its faculty, where diversity encompasses not only race, ethnicity, gender, class, and ability, but also rank, age, field of study, and institutional background. We welcome applicants who are committed to creating inclusive learning environments for a variety of students, including historically underrepresented students.
Apply:
Applications should include a 1-2 page cover letter, a resume, a 1-page statement of your teaching philosophy, two letters of recommendation, a writing sample (of work in your field, no more than 2000 words, which may be unpublished or published), and 1-2 pages of teaching materials for a class you have taught (either a lesson plan, assignment topic, or writing resources) that suggest your pedagogical values. In your cover letter or teaching philosophy, please include a paragraph discussing how diversity influences your past and present teaching; research, community engagement, and/or life experiences; and how you would incorporate issues of diversity into your contributions to teaching and programming in the NYU Expository Writing Program.
