Kanpur: The station house police have made a significant breakthrough by arresting a criminal who was cheating people by posing as an “IAS officer” and promising them a government job. According to officials, the fraudster has extorted an exorbitant sum of money running into lakhs of rupees from unsuspecting victims. The Colonelganj police quickly arrested the accused and took him into custody. Inspector Ravindra Srivastava, officer-in-charge of Colonelganj police station, said that in January 2023, Amar Singh, a resident of Vijay Nagar, had lodged a complaint against Amit Singh and his father Satyendra Bahadur for defrauding him and his acquaintances of about Rs 21 lakh on the pretext of securing them a government job. The accused Amit Singh cheated them by posing as an IAS officer. He even arranged for publication of newspaper articles in local media, proclaiming his appointment as an IAS officer, thereby gaining influence in the neighbourhood. He subsequently demanded Rs 5 lakh from each individual, providing them with fraudulent appointment letters. The victims realised the deception only when they tried to join their supposed posts using the fake letters. The police in connection with this case had earlier jailed the accused’s father, Satyendra Bahadur. However, Amit Singh had absconded, leading to a manhunt to arrest him. Acting on the tip-off of an informant, the authorities arrested Amit Singh, a resident of Benajhabar, from a tea stall situated at Six Bangaliya on Wednesday and sent him to jail.
