History of Mamata Bangladesh For Viva Board
Mamata began its journey in the field of FP-MCH in 1983 by providing FP doorstep service to eligible couples and MCH service in the clinics, especially to the poorest segment of the population in Chattogram City Corporation. Since then, Mamata has continued its dedicated and remarkable journey. During this long journey, Mamata received financial and technical assistance from the government subvention fund from July 1984 to June 1986. After June 1986, Mamata received financial and technical support from USAID through FPSTC from August 1986 to July 1997 for the Family Planning Services Project.
Thereafter, Mamata made a five-year agreement with JSI/USAID for financial and technical support from August 1997 to June 2002 for family health services. After successfully completing the five-year agreement with JSI/USAID, Mamata received an award from NSDP/Pathfinder International from July 2002 to December 2004. Since then, Mamata has been running a 30-bed Mamata Matreesadan at Bandartila and 18 satellite clinics with its own fund from January 2005 to date.
Mamata was also awarded by the ADB consortium to implement the Urban Primary Health Care Project (UPHCP) from 2000-2012.
Mamata has been running several healthcare facilities in Chattogram since January 2013. These include a 60-bed Mamata Nagar Matreesadan located in Lalkhan Bazar, a bed Mamata Matreesadan situated in Bandartila, and a Mamata Health Service & Safe Delivery Centre in Panchlaish. Furthermore, there are six Primary Health Care Centers under Chattogram City Corporation in six different wards, which are also run by Mamata with its resources.

Tuberculosis Control Program of Mamata Bangladesh
Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major health issue in Bangladesh and is a significant public health challenge. The National Tuberculosis Program (NTP) has set a goal to eliminate TB from Bangladesh, by reducing morbidity, mortality, and transmission of the disease until it is no longer a public health problem. This will be achieved by providing universal access to high-quality care for people with TB. Mamata, with the technical and financial support of Global Fund (GFATM) and BRAC, has been implementing the TB Control Program in Ward # 13, 14, 15, 22, 24, 29, and 39 of the Chattogram City Corporation area, covering a population of 8,87,299.
The program aims to expand TB control activities to cover areas that are uncovered or under-covered and disadvantaged populations in catchment areas. The Mamata TB Control Program has been gradually covering different factories, garments, densely populated workers’ colonies, and slums through innovative and sustainable activities. The problem is exacerbated by increasing population density, rapid urbanization, poverty, and illiteracy. To reach the target, Mamata has been operating four microscopy centers and seven DOTS centers under the TB Control Program.
Children Are Protected From Violence of Mamata Bangladesh
From the perspective of Bangladesh, any form of violence against children can be considered a violation of their right to physical integrity and dignity. Such violence is also a breach of their fundamental rights as citizens, which are guaranteed by the country’s constitution and fostered in the UNCRC, National Child Policy, and Child Act. The situation regarding violence against children is worse in the Chattogram City Corporation area, due to the presence of migrant labor forces from different parts of the country who have moved to the city with their families, including their children.
Since 2013, Mamata has been implementing the “Children are Protected from Violence” project in Chattogram with the financial and technical assistance of Save the Children International in Bangladesh (SCIB). The aim of the project is to establish a government declaration that bans PHP in school settings and to raise awareness among teachers, SMC members, parents, caregivers, elected representatives, and opinion leaders about the negative effects of VAC, SGBV, Child Marriage, and PHP. The project also aims to provide appropriate information, education, and knowledge to them regarding their rights.

Mamata Cultural Institute was established in 2017 to mentor our children with our own Bangla culture and practices. The vision behind its establishment was to instill and revitalize our cultural heritage among the younger generation, and to build their psycho-social well-being free from foreign cultural aggression, moral degradation, and virtual abuses.
Nowadays, it seems that the majority of our youth are wasting their valuable time through misuse of the internet, playing games, and watching foreign movies. Consequently, many of them are becoming more interested in practicing foreign cultures. In response to this, the government has taken various steps to overcome these problems. In solidarity with the government, Mamata, a non-governmental voluntary organization, facilitates the young generation to practice their cultural heritage through the Mamata Cultural Institute. This helps promote a healthy cultural environment and preserves our cultural heritage.

Mamata established four schools named Mamata School in wards 38 and 39 of Chottagram City Corporation in 2009. The goal was to spread education among underprivileged children, children of garment workers, dropouts, and underachievers. The school started with pre-primary classes and gradually progressed to junior school by 2019. The aim now is to expand to secondary and higher secondary levels.
Mamata Child Care Center of Mamata Bangladesh
In the majority of garment factories, about 80% of workers are female, and they make up the vital sector that earns more than 80% of the foreign exchange for the country. However, these factories do not have child daycare centers, making it difficult for workers to care for and nourish their children while they are at work. Instead, they have to rely on their neighbors or other children in their homes to care for their children. This situation causes workers to become worried and unable to concentrate on their jobs, which often hampers their working performance. Skilled female workers often quit their jobs to take care of their newborn children, causing a shortage of skilled workers in the garment industry.
Under the Factory Act of 1965, the management authority of the industry is required to open a daycare center where more than 50 female workers are employed. In solidarity with this issue, Mamata began establishing childcare centers outside of the CEPZ, KEPZ, and EPZ areas in 2006 with the help of factory owners. These centers provide necessary logistics and baby care items, as well as breastfeeding corners and child development activities. Mamata provides technical support to establish childcare centers at factories and arranges training facilities for caregivers. In 2020, Mamata trained 25 caregivers in three factories and decorated two childcare centers.

Parents of these children are often less interested in sending them to school or educational institutions during times of financial crisis. Additionally, many parents are not aware of the importance of education. Although some impoverished parents may initially send their children to school, they may eventually drop out due to various socioeconomic reasons. In order to support their families and improve their quality of life, these parents often involve their children in various work activities to earn money.
Many children from poor families are unable to attend school due to extreme poverty, but some are prevented from going to school because of their parents’ careless attitudes. The number of slums in Chattogram City Corporation was 2216 (15.90%) in the 2014 slum census, compared to 186 (6.22%) in the 1997 census. According to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) literacy report of 2020, the literacy rate of the slum population (7 years and above) is 35.29%, while the national literacy rate is 74.70%. To address this issue, Mamata initiated the SUCHALA project, with support from the Anukul Foundation. The project aims to encourage guardians to send their children back to school and continue their education.
