Labour Minister Manusha Nanayakkara says state services require a workforce of one million people to operate at present.
Speaking in Parliament today, he added that under previous governments, however, the state sector workforce had increased to 1.7 million, while government appointments were given to graduates three times in the recent past.
Responding to a question raised by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa on government appointments of unemployed graduates, Minister Nanayakara questioned what MP Premadasa proposes to do under his government policy.
Minister Manusha Nanayakkara questioned whether the Leader of Opposition would ignore the burden and needs of the state and provide appointments to all unemployed graduates.
Responding to the question, MP Premadasa said the problem of unemployed graduates cannot be solved by the state sector alone, but can only be solved jointly through the state, private, semi-government and foreign employment sectors.
MP Premadasa said this was the solution that would be provided under the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) regime.
He further claimed that provincial governors were providing state appointments to their close aides but the government was unable to resolve the problems of unemployed graduates.
The opposition leader reiterated that the issue of unemployed graduates should be resolved together with the private, semi-public and foreign employment sectors. (Newswire)
