Russia has declared Freedom House, a U.S. nonprofit that advocates for international democracy, an “undesirable” organization, the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office said on May 7.
Russia’s “undesirable organizations” law was adopted in 2015, effectively banning cooperation with around 160 organizations that have since been included on the list.
Russian prosecutors justified their decision by Freedom House by allegedly “promoting… a ‘dominant’ role for the United States in the world” and supporting pro-Ukrainian policies.
The statement also claims the NGO provides “informational, financial and legal support” to “Russian opposition structures, pro-Western and LGBT activists… and persons convicted of committing terrorist crimes.”

International Amnesty said in February that Russia is increasingly using vague anti-terror legislation to “silence opposition voices and instill fear among those who dare to speak out.”
The country has also adopted increasingly repressive legislation and restrictions targeting local sectors. LGBT community.
A Russian parliamentary committee said in March that authorities would begin investigating the inclusion of Freedom House on the “undesirables” list.
Freedom House has repeatedly pointed out the state of disrepair of democracy in Russia as Vladimir Putin’s regime increases pressure against domestic opposition, free media and civil society.
NGOs Freedom in the world 2024 assigned report Russia a democracy score of 13 out of 100, classifying the country as “not free.”
The Kyiv Independent contacted Freedom House for comment but did not receive a response by the time of publication.

Ukraine is one of the few countries in the group of 29 assessed by Freedom House in the Nations in Transit 2024 report that is successfully moving towards democracy amid growing anti-democratic tendencies.
